522A (3) Contemporary Democratic Theory

Section 001 - Term 2 - W 10:00 - 1:00, Grad Room

Instructor: Mark Warren

Contemporary democratic theory is now diverse, expansive, and exciting, offering multiple opportunities to combine normatively significant problems with empirical research. This seminar provides an opportunity to explore some of these connections. The first part of the seminar surveys traditional and received problems in democratic theory. The second part focuses on two comprehensive approaches to deliberative democracy within complex, large-scale societies, those of Jurgen Habermas and Iris Young. The third part of the seminar focuses on recent work in cosmopolitan democracy. The final part of the seminar is devoted the research and theorizing of seminar participants.
